In my work, I use the grotesque as a way to discuss our dependence on technology. Specifically, I question the notion that while technology assists humanity, the increasing reality of data collection simultaneously makes humans the product. Making art and painting allows me to depict the dystopian futures I envision us moving toward. I wonder how much humanity we are willing to give up to continue our participation in technological advancement.
For instance, my “Evolved Corporeal Technology” series is inspired by our human need to connect with technology without regard for the cost to ourselves or to our participation in the world. I imagine a future where we will be amenable to give up more of ourselves and our liberties in exchange for keeping up with technology. My “Phenotypes” have given up the basic freedoms of their biological senses, and they are ecstatically happy.
My process involves stepping away from the computer screen and working with my hands. The physical act of drawing and painting allows me to disconnect from my ever- present relationship with technology for a short time. In these moments, I hope to find objectivity and a clarity about our codependence with these machines.
The work envisions a near future, where the progression of technology has impacted human biology. Our humanity will have evolved towards the grotesque.
